Jackie Nickerson- Photo of the Day: Paul
This series of photographs changed the way I see the world and changed my career.
It is almost impossible to choose a favourite photograph, there are so many and so many of my photographs mean so much to me.
If I force myself I choose, ‚Paul“, 1999 from the FARM series.
This photo was made of Paul, a worker on a tea plantation in Malawi. I was living in Zimbabwe and had driven up to Malawi to continue working on a project about changing perceptions of identity by focusing on the unique protective clothing that farm workers made for themselves.
Working conditions on tea plantations are challenging, often cold and wet. The workers made protective clothing for specific tasks, often recycling materials formerly used for other purposes on the farm.
They would often choose to use their own improvisations instead of the protective clothing provided because it was more effective.
